According to foreign media reports, BioLogic is a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. They recently launched a new project to try to use microorganisms to add scientific functions to clothes.
Principle analysis
BioLogic uses Natto Bacillus subtilis. These bacteria, like pine cones, can automatically expand and contract according to the humidity of the air. The greater the humidity, the greater the fabric expansion. So, taking advantage of this principle, BioLogic worked with designers to create a new type of clothing called “second skin” that becomes more breathable based on the wearer’s increased body temperature and humidity.
Natto Bacillus subtilis is a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine, and the BioLogic team made it into a biofilm and integrated it into spandex fabric. The pattern and shape of biofilm are different, and the effect will also change accordingly. Moreover, the breathability effect of biofilm is directly proportional to the humidity response. When the humidity reaches 100%, the biofilm will be completely open and the breathability will be maximized.
