The development of science and technology is really amazing. Generally, metal materials have a relatively high density. Wouldn’t it be incredible if 99.99% of a metal material was made of air? Currently, the American company Boeing has announced that it has developed a metal material that has such an effect. This material is much lighter than plastic and is also considered to be the lightest metal material in the world.

The mesh on the dandelion is what this metal looks like, and in appearance it has a three-dimensional open honeycomb polymer structure. If you doubt its strength, think about the structure of human bones – although bones are hollow on the inside, they are very hard on the outside. So, although most of this metal structure is air, it doesn’t mean that it will break with any movement.

Specific to the material itself, it has two main characteristics: one is its compressibility in absorbing energy, and the other is its hollow lightness. To make it easier for people to understand, Boeing gave an example of an egg-throwing contest when introducing these two features. In this game, contestants have to drop eggs from the 25th floor. In order to prevent the eggs from breaking, everyone naturally has to find a way to wrap the outside with layers of bubble wrap. But if this new material is used to wrap eggs, the packaging of the eggs can become much smaller, and it will not prevent the energy of the egg from squeezing the material from being absorbed the moment it hits the ground. The ultra-light metal material is wrapped around the egg and it can survive even if it is dropped from a height of about 75 meters. The material’s compression performance is also very strong, and it can restore its original shape even if it is compressed by 50%.

As one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world, Boeing will of course use it in aerospace equipment after developing this material. For example, structural parts such as aircraft sidewall panels, luggage compartments, floors and seats will be the application scenarios of this new material. When a material whose structure is 99.99% made of air is used on an airplane, a direct result of it is of course that the weight of the airplane becomes lighter, which can naturally save a lot of fuel for airlines.
