Spider silk is stronger than steel of the same thickness, and even more flexible than nylon. If it is used to make armor, it will be at least three times stronger than Kevlar body armor.
Produced in the spider’s whirling glands, spider silk is an irregularly coiled protein that is formed under precise acidity, water content, and chemical concentrations and is eventually released through ducts. These fibers are water-impermeable, partially transparent and partially curly. In addition, spider silk can also be used as a bandage and has good antibacterial properties.
At present, scientists are very fond of spider silk because of its wide range of uses, such as parachute ropes and artificial blood vessels. In nature, spider silk spins into thread-like structures, but in the laboratory the protein can be rearranged into spheres, films and capsules.
A team of scientists in the United States has tried to genetically modify goats to produce spider silk protein in goat milk. An artificial spider silk is now created using synthetic genes that induce bacteria to produce silk protein, a structural protein in spider silk. Spiders then use the technique to effectively grow the bacteria, weaving the silk protein into their silk.
This synthetic spider silk has a variety of industrial uses, such as automobile manufacturing and medical fields.
