A musty smell or the appearance of tiny cross-shaped spots on the tent fabric indicates that the tent is moldy. Fungus can penetrate the polyurethane coating of tent fabric and grow between the fabric and coating, destroying the fabric. This damage is irreversible, but if you take immediate action, you can prevent further mold growth and cause more damage.
If the tent begins to get moldy, set it up, scrub it clean with warm soapy water and a sponge, dry it with a clean sponge, and then clean it with a sponge mixed with half a cup of Lysol solution and 3.7 liters of hot water. Let the solution sit on the surface of the fabric and let it dry. Then, mix one cup of salt, one cup of strong lemon juice and 3.7 liters of hot water, rub the solution into the visible mold spots, and let it dry. With this method, mold growth can be stopped and musty odors eliminated, but traces of mold cannot be removed.
